Bob and Lois Winter passed down a photo album to their daughter, Pat Winter Oakes. The content in the album covers mostly the 1920s and 1930. This covers time they were at several locations. Of course there are family photos in Wrentham.
Robert Stewart Winter Sr. was born January 23, 1891 in Mansfield, MA
1900- He lived in Wrentham, MA. His two brothers Murray and Alan were working at Brown and Sharpe in Providence, RI making taps and dies.
Following high school he attended Rhode Island School of Design, maybe 1908-1911 .
1910 drawing class at Rhode Island School of Design. This is from time Robert Winter would have attended. He likely took the architectural courses. Note the number of women. The School was started by a group of women.
Here is an architectural class some years later:
In 1914, Robert and brother Charles were working as draftsmen and sharing rooms at the YMCA in Woonsocket, RI, shown at right. There is a historical marker to this YMCA at Main and Federal Streets. In 1909-10 Charles was working for Winter Bros. in Wrentham. In 1918, Charles is working as a draftsman in Waltham, MA and living in the YMCA there. In his draft registration 1917-18, he was working for Winter Brothers. He had married in 1917.
In 1915 Robert S. Winter married Velma White in Wrentham, MA.
In 1916-1918, Robert S. Winter Sr and wife, Velma, were liviing at 33 Collins Street, Woonsocket, RI. He was working as a draftsman for the Taft-Peirce Manufacturing Company.
In 1919, Robert is Assistant Chief with the Taft-Peirce Manufacturing Company; located at 32 Mechanic Avenue in Woonsocket, RI. The Taft-Peirce Manufacturing Company is one of the oldest special machine and tool manufacturing organizations in the United States. Founded in 1875, its growth and development have been coincident with that of light and high grade machinery requiring interchangeable parts. The sewing machine, the type-setting machine, the typewriter, the adding machine, the motorcycle, the automobile, the aviation motor, and countless other mechanical devices have been assisted to commercial perfection by the talent and facilities of this organization, which also provides many of the fine tools and machinery, both special and standard, required in their manufacture.
The plant was accessibly located in Woonsocket, R. I., 14 miles north of Providence, 28 miles south of Worcester and 38 miles southwest of Boston on the New Haven Railroad, and is but a mile from the Blackstone (Mass.) depot of the same line. Frequent rail and bus service is available to Woonsocket, to Blackstone, and to nearby Providence, Worcester, and Boston." (Quote from 1952.) The firm was dissolved in October 1995
1920 4385 (1259) Phlla av W, Detroit, MI, manager Wilton Engineering.
