In 1992, Jane Zuniga, Mary Lou Bell and Lucy Joyce, seeking exercise, began walking regularly in the Barton Hill neighborhood. Over time others joined the group. A number of women who were teaching school would walk during the summer. Summer time walkers included Pat Oakes, Margie Holland and maybe Cheryl Smithers. Pat Oakes' earliest entry in her diary is June 4, 2003, "walked early with the girls."
