Sherman Cody Hull and Laura Annis Oakes

Laura Annis Oakes was born August 9, 1909, in Issaquena County, MS, near Harworth, MS, a sawmill town along the Yazoo River. The town no longer exists, a casualty of too frequent flooding, clear cutting and the depression. She was the only daughter of Charles Franklin and Sophie Dose Oakes. Her siblings included Frederick Franklin, John Christian, Robert Grantham and William Warren. Two siblings, Milton Elliot and Ruth Dean died young. Four of the children are shown with their parents in the picture below. The family life centered around farming, fishing, hunting and trapping. Life was difficult, little opportunity to accumulate any wealth. Loans were necessary survive. Most of the family eventually moved to Vicksburg and left their farm to be confiscated for failure to pay taxes. Fred left in 1922 at the age of 19 and found work with the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad and a workman in their repair shop on Levee Street in Vicksburg. John Christian left not too much later and found work as an air brake mechanic at the YandMV, likely as a result of his brother, Fred's recommendation. Charles Franklin and wife, Sophie, took Grantham and Laura Annis and moved to Vicksburg not long after Fred and Chris. Charles found work at the YandMV carpenter shop. Laura Annis soon met Sherman Cody Hull, the son of the packet boat operator. She and Cody were married in 1923 when Cody was 21 and Laura was 14 years and 3 months. She had to get permission from an adult. Her certificate was filed by Murray Alford Peyton (1896-1965) who was from Sharkey County and, at the time, was a river boat pilot for Sherman Cody Hull's father's very successful packet boat business. The Hull Packet Line carried cargo throughout the Delta navigatable waterways.

Cody and Laura Annis had seven children, Edna May, Elva Grace, Milton Burgell, Don Raymond, Ruth Joy, Betty June and Sherman Cody Jr..

Cody and Laura were divorced in 193; she later married Earl Walls. Cody died in 1962 and Laura Annis died in 1987.
